So long 2007! It was a good year. Artistically I think I got a little better. I did buy myself a sketch book for 2008, which I hope to put something in everyday, we’ll see how that goes. Here’s the last sketch of the year I did, nothing great. Just some doodle on the back of a napkin.

I can tell I’m getting ready to start Astronaut Dad book 2. This new redesign of my site will have been up for a year later this coming January. I’m really happy with it. I think there are some small tweaks coming down the road though. Mainly in the portfolio. I have a lot of new stuff I want to swap out in the art department. Take care and I’ll post more after the new year.

Here’s a recent commission I did for a friend on The Comic Forums. He has an awesome jam piece of The Legion Of Doom, the villains on Super Friends. He asked me to draw Gorilla Grodd.

A super smart ape who’s basically gone after every major hero in the DC universe. Thought it came out pretty good. Looking forward to seeing how the rest of the characters turn out. This piece also contains the amazing talents of Danielle Corsetto, Mike Norton, June Bob Kim, and a few others.

Finally, if you’ve got some cash put away, you can buy one (yup, just one) of my Marvel Masterpiece cards on ebay. Hope you like Mudusa.

I haven’t posted much art recently as I’ve been trying to keep the posts mainly about the release of Astronaut Dad. I’m sure we’ll still have some more reviews down the road. I’m probably going to take a little break between now and the new year with posting much unless something related to the book comes in. I’ve got a bunch of Indiana Jones Heritage cards, commissions, and some more sketch cards on the way as well. Not to mention starting book two in January and full time freelance. I’m glad things have been busy though, usually the winter can be kind of slow for freelance.

Speaking of Winter, here’s a commission I did a while back of The Winter Solider, done in a very Kirby style. I wish the King had gotten the chance to draw Bucky in his most recent state, but it was fun to pretend he did. Have a good holiday.

Another review is in for Astronaut Dad, and yes it’s a good one. This one comes from Bart Croonenborghs at Broken Frontier. As happy as I am that Bart liked the book, he is the first person that I know of that didn’t think the cover fit the story. What are ya gonna do?

Saw I Am Legend last night, didn’t think I was going to like it but I did. The dog deserves an Oscar for best supporting actor.

Finally, Smashout Comics has announced an online reprint project to help care for one of my all time favorite comic writers, Bill Mantlo.  In 1992, Bill Mantlo was struck by a car and suffered extensive brain injuries. Today, he requires 24-hour care and is not expected to fully recover. Though Medicaid covers his basic needs, the project will help with new clothes and other life improvements.

Swords and Swashbucklers, the science fiction/fantasy graphic novel and 12-issue series that followed, originally published by EPIC Comics, will be reprinted in full as a series of free, online PDFs on Wowio, the week of December 16.

Once it’s online, it’ll be downloadable.

So for anyone who’s a comic, sci-fi, fantasy, or adventure fan, there is no reason not to do this. You get free comics by one of the most underreated comic writers of all time, and he gets the help he needs.

With the releaase of Astronaut Dad last week we are getting some great feedback from the book. You can listen to us on the Comixology podcast It Came Out On Wednesday. You can listen to it here. For those of you who haven’t gotten the book yet you can also head over there and check out some exclusive pages of the book on their site.
Also The Comics Waiting Room and The Pulse have taken notice to the release and this is what they had to say:

Silent Devil’s Astronaut Dad debuts with rave reviews

Astronaut Dad Volume One, the latest book from Silent Devil, is out in
stores today. Created by David Hopkins and Brent Schoonover, Astronaut
Dad is a coming-of-age story about the children of astronauts during
the early 1960s right before the Apollo program took off. It’s a
fictional account of Jimmy Norton and Vanessa Kelly who discover that
their dads, as Astronaut reservists, are actually part of a spy
orbital program.

The book has received advanced praise from some of the best in the business:

“Astronaut Dad is a loving reminder of America’s investment in the
space race, and how real people were at the heart of our quest for the
stars. Well worth taking a look, and bound to hook you once you do.”
– B. Clay Moore, writer of Hawaiian Dick and The Leading Man

“For being relatively young in the comics world, these two unassuming
creators have definitely set the bar pretty high for what is possible
in their careers.” “4.5 out of 5 bullets.”
— Chris Murman, Silver
Bullet Comic Books

“Equal parts tender and thrilling, Astronaut Dad is the perfect
marriage of story and art. I can’t wait to read the rest of it!”

Joshua Hale Fialkov, writer of Elk’s Run and Punks the Comic

“Astronaut Dad is a refreshingly clear-eyed look at how America’s
dreams for the stars impacted and interfered with the very earthbound
needs of those charged with making those dreams a reality and their
families. A wittily observed slice of Space Age life, thanks to
Hopkins’ crisp dialogue and the elegant minimalist lines of
Schoonover’s drawings.”
– Fred Van Lente, writer of Action
Philosophers and Marvel Adventures

Finaly, Chasing Ray talks about Astronaut Dad in their article about graphic novels aimed at the young.

The great podcast Half Hour Wasted, hosted by Brad and Frank, was kind enough to drop a mention of meeting me at Wizard World a few weeks ago and picking up Astronaut Dad. It’s episode forty two. Give it a listen here.

If you ever wanted to see what I look like sitting behind a table at a comic convention, sweating out a 24 hour comic or beating the holy crap out of a writer with a fake sword. Enjoy these links!

1. Fanboy Video: Astronaut Dad creator interview

Nice short interview by Scott Hinze.

2. MTN Access to Art: Hosted at the 24 Hour Comic Day in the Minnesota Center for Book Arts.

Though there isn’t an interview with me, you can see me in a few spots looking like a crazy man trying to get my comic done. Which I swear I’ll post someday.

3. Battle of The Comic Book Titans!

After sitting next to this battle pit for two straight days, me and David decided to give this thing a go. If the horrible fighting doesn’t entertain you just keep your eye on the weirdo in the beast man costume who refs the entire thing. Awesome.

I posted these link in honor of Astronaut Dad being released yesterday. It should be in a comic store near you. If you like these videos I suggest checking out Fanboyvideo.com. There are a growing number or videos there worth checking out.

Christian Beranek (publisher of Astronaut Dad) recently handed me a preview copy of his newest project through Zenescope titled Willow Creek. A werewolf book that looks pretty good. In a way to promote the book they are giving artists a handful of copies that contain sketch covers to make a rare collectible for fans. Thought the idea was pretty cool so I figured I’d do a couple.

Here are the ones I did.

cover1.jpg

1. Really didn’t like this one, pretty much just sketched it with a pen on a flight back home. Tried to save it when I got back, but not sure it really worked.

2. This one turned out better.

3. My favorite.

4. Second Favorite.

5. You don’t really see the werewolf’s in the issue so I sort of made mine up. Kind had a 70’s Marvel monster book vibe in my head.  Hope you give the book a shot.
