Went to the Chip Kidd lecture last night at the Minneapolis Public Library. Chip knows how to work a crowd. Half the time I felt like I was at a really good comedy club and the other half I felt like I was at an amazing design lecture. The man has made over a thousand books covers, many related to comics. For me, my favorite will always be Batman: Animated.
That book really changed the way I drew, as it was the first thing related to the animated show that I could study. It’s a great read and the design is amazing. I makes you feel like you are reading this on the dirty, messy desk of Bruce Timm.
I got the chance to give Chip a copy of Astronaut Dad, I wasn’t expecting much, especially since I didn’t buy a copy of his new book, The Learners.
That I’ll get at the library. He was really cool about it though and just said thanks, and “nice cover”. Whether that copy even leaves the library is anyones guess but it did feel good to tell him how much a book he designed meant to me.
