For those that live in the Minneapolis area the new Will Eisner documentary Portrait of a Sequential Artist is playing at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design this Sunday, March 1st at 1pm. Looks like a great movie. Here is a link for more information on the film.
Also on hand Eisner’s editor, Chris Couch will be there to talk to the students and those attending the screening before the movie. Comic Book Legal Defense Fund and Will Eisner Estate are sponsoring this for Will Eisner week. Everyone is welcome and it’s free.

Finally, a little photoshop fun that’s going around. Create a fake band’s fake album art.

Here are the rules.
To Do This:

1 - Go to “wikipedia.” Hit “random”
or click http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random
The first random wikipedia article you get is the name of your band.

2 - Go to “Random quotations”
or click http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3
The last four or five words of the very last quote of the page is the title of your first album.

3 - Go to flickr and click on “explore the last seven days”
or click http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days
Third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.

4 - Use photoshop or similar to put it all together.

5 - Post it to FB with this text in the “caption” and TAG the friends you want to join in. (you can untag yourself if you don’t want this photo up)
Here’s mine. I think I got really lucky.

Recently, Marc J. Fletcher over at Den of Geek wrote a list of Top Ten Comicbook Creators to Watch Out For. I’m flattered to to admit I was on the list.

Brent Schoonover has penciled a wide range of work including Dead @ 17: Rough Cut Volume 2 (Viper Comics), Astronaut Dad (Silent Devil) and Horrorwood (Ape Entertainment). He continually puts out impressive work and doesn’t look to stop anytime soon. His series, Horrorwood, is a classic noir style comic that pulls the reader in with its sharp visuals and engaging story. It’s not to be missed.

The only bummer about the whole thing was they sadly put up an image of someone who is not me. How they found this image, who knows? It’s the thought that counts right?

I mean if they wanted a cool photo I’m stocked. No offense, guy in Yankees hat.

If you happen to be strolling down your local grocery store aisle and happen to notice the cool retro packaging from General Mills cereals such as Honey-Nut Cheerios, Lucky Charms, Cocoa Puffs, Trix, or regular Cheerios be sure to pick them up. Not only can you get a free t-shirt with five proof of purchases (How old school is that?) but I contributed some artwork for the project as well. I’m not certain where my artwork fits with the campaign but if you see any of these images below, those were done by me. It was fun to work on these characters in their older simpler styles, their looks today are quite different but there’s just something about those simple illustrations that are hard not to enjoy.

Yesterday David Hopkins posted an nice little write up on our still “soon to be released” Astronaut Dad: Volume 2. I’m working on it where I can and I wish it was out already but sadly I’ve got to take care of that darn mortgage payment first. He posted one of my favorite pages that is in volume 2. It’s just a quick little shot of a bunch of kids getting their class photo taken. It’s been an interesting journey with this book. So many people come up to me and tell me how surprised they are at how few actual segments there are involving space exploration and astronauts but still thought the book was better than they expected it to be, which to me, is a pretty nice compliment. Looking forward to getting the final volume into everyone’s hands.

I figured it had been a while since I’ve shown off what the old studio looks like. Even though I’m posting these I’m actually looking to swap out some of the items I have sitting around. The wife and I are planning a little spring cleaning of the basement in a month so I’m sure I’ll rummage through some stuff down stairs that deserves to see the light of day and replace some stuff. I’m also trying to think of what new old school movie poster to get to swap out The Mummy, any suggestions?

Recently I was asked by a group of aspiring colorist on the HueDoo section on The Comics Forums to contribute some artwork for a coloring challenge. I decide to give them a pin-up I of did of Doc Savage. I thought everyone did a fantastic job and appreciate everyone who participated.

Hey gang, I need help picking my banner for the convention season. I’ve decided to go with some of my vector work cause it will look the best blown up to 33 inches by 77 inches. Another decision I decided on was not putting work up from any specific project that I have done as I just wanted a strong image that didn’t connect with anything. The dimensions are a little tricky to find an existing image to work with but I’d like to get something done and off to the printer sometime next week. Here are a few that I came up with. Let me know which one you like best.

1. I like this one best overall but think it needs some tweaks, especially where my name is, something needs to make my name pop out more.

2. I really like this one but I don’t like how it gets cropped in the space. I’d like to see her other leg fit in there but if you shrink it down you create this very large empty space that I don’t think you can do much with.

3. This one I like the least but sadly makes the most sense. I mean for the most part I am going to be at comic conventions with this thing and this is an actual comic character. The other two are from some roller derby projects I’ve done and just happen to like the art. It’s a tough predicament. On one hand the familiarity of the character is a benefit here but on the other side I think the other two images are stronger but they are not comic work or characters.

Please help, you’re my only hope.
