Here’s the inked version of The Shadow pencils I posted a while back. Had a lot of fun with this one. Always love drawing the old school pulp characters. This one might be sticking around the studio though, the person who asked for the commission has not responded to my attempts to finalizing the transaction on it. So if you dig it, let me know. There could be a legit reason so I plan on given the person some more time, but I feel confident it can find a home regardless.

If you happen to live in the Twin Cities area and are looking for something awesome to do tonight, I suggest heading on down to the Minnesota Historical Society for their annual Retro-Rama event.

Dressing vintage is highly encouraged. There will be a DJ, a fashion show by local designers, a mini boutique for shopping, 50’s trivia, and a drinking lounge that would make Tony Stark envious.

On top of that the History Center is opening their new exhibit Minnesota’s Greatest Generation: the Depression, the War, the Boom. Being able to get snippets of the project thanks to the wife, who works at the History Center, this show is going to be incredible and I can’t wait to see it.

Or at least the wacky cherry spoon in the park next to the Walker Art Center. Another fun Fing Fang Foom commission. Never get tired of them.

Been going a 100 MPH here at Brent Schoonover Illustration. Hoping to get the last chapter of Astronaut Dad book 2 done within a month and have it ready to go but it’s had to take yet another hiatus till some freelance gets taken care of. Good thing is I’ll have more to post around here shortly. In the meantime I am posting some sketches of characters for projects I may or may not ever get to. Hopefully they’ll find their way in some form or another.

The first one is a character I created named Bowler Bradley. A character I thought of while thinking about doing a comic strip. If you can’t tell I’ve been devouring stories of Slam Bradley, Dick Tracy, and a old E.C. Comics you’re blind. I’d like to flesh it out a little more before I’d go any farther. The paranormal private detective thing isn’t exactly uncharted territory. Here are original unedited notes on the character.

  • Bowler is a  P.I. who specializes in the unusual.
  • Wears a bowler hat (hence the name)
  • Son of an ex gold gloves Chicago cop and an exotic antique dealer who dealt with the supernatural.
  • Kicked off the force for his beliefs in the paranormal and it’s links to his parent’s unsolved murder.
  • Now runs a small Private Detective firm above a run down theatre on the south side of Chicago, which would make him a Sox fan not a Cubs fan.
  • I wanted to give him a ghost side kick but that might be too close to Steve Niles “Cal McDonald” stuff. Maybe a ghost receptionist or something?

The second character I’m keeping a little more quiet about. The concept is a little more complex. The title is Burner, and here is the main character Brett Burner. I haven’t gotten it all figured out yet but I’m hoping to flesh it out and maybe write some of it before the end of the year. It’s a large scale story. Something that would take a real commitment. We’ll see how it ends up.

My friend Brett sent this cool story from back home in the Rockford, Illinois area. This is from the Rockford Register Star.

LOVES PARK —
A painted advertisement of a cartoon boy sitting next to an oversized bottle of Squirt surprised several city officials, residents and business owners. The Parkside Uniforms building, 5502 N. Second St., was demolished in March. The advertisement was revealed on the adjacent building. Robert Champion, owner of the building complex that houses the Slice of Italy, said he didn’t know the advertisement was painted there.

Now he’s trying to figure out what to do next.

“If I don’t find someone interested in it, I am going to have to get rid of it,” Champion said. “I need to get new siding on that side of the building, and I can’t keep it there.”

Removing the art could be difficult, he said. The wood could break or the paint could chip.

Mayor Darryl Lindberg said city officials weren’t aware of the advertisement. A lot of people collect old advertisements, Lindberg said, and it could even be quite valuable. Lindberg said it would be a shame to paint over or destroy it.

The advertisement could date to before 1950, said Bruce Snively, owner Loves Park Sporting Goods, a neighboring business. The design of the advertisement reminds Snively of other promotions he saw while growing up in the ’50s.

“I hope a collector sees it and wants to buy it,” Snively said. “I am sure it can be removed and then put back up on another wall.”

It was normal to paint advertisements on buildings, said Dave Swanson, who works in Loves Park. Swanson said he made a point to take a couple photos of the Squirt display because it’s a treasure.

“I remember when I was a kid I would drink Squirt when it looked like that,” Swanson said. “This ad is nice to see because it’s from the past and it’s in good shape.”

If anyone is interested in preserving the Squirt advertisement, call Champion at 815-988-4800.

Had a blast this past weekend at The Source, wanted to thank everyone who stopped by and grabbed a sketch, a books, or just came wanted to learn me about drawing. It was a great time had by all. I was fortunate enough to sit next to local creator, David Kocholek and see his awesome book The McGuffin Exchange. If you find yourself near a copy make sure to pick it up.

Did a lot of sketches that I forgot to take photos of but did manage to snag a few pics of the day.
