Recently Allen Klingelhoets from Jazma Online did an interview with me about my upcoming issue of Bluewater Comics Vincent Price Presents ongoing series.

The interview covers everything from my favorite Price films to what it was like writing my first comic. Hope you check it out.

There’s a couple things I’d like to point out. First, the artwork they used in the interview is not final. The colors will be different than the ones shown. I am posting two teaser pages from the book and throughout the issue I am being inked by the super awesome Stacie Ponder, who runs the equally awesome website Final Girl. Go check that out as well.

It might still be several months before the issue hit stands. I know the interview states it’s issue fourteen, so hopefully you’ll be seeing it soon. I’ll make sure to post more when the issue is released.

No this post isn’t about the song by Martika. If you make it to a comic shop this week make sure to check out the Toy Story issue four from Boom! Studios. I jumped in for a cover gig on this thing with just a few days notice. I had a blast drawing the characters from the Pixar film and hope to do more in the future.

Here’s some more sketch cards I was asked to draw.

1. Emma Frost, the White Queen from X-Men.

2. Daredevil, who keeps showing up this week on the blog.

3. This one was fun. Original Snowtrooper design for Empire Strikes Back. Not seen in the final film.

4&5. Finally, was asked to do two Indiana Jones cards done in a cute style. I had done some like this for the two Indie sketch card sets I did for Topps. I always feared people might feel cheated by getting one over my regular style. Glad to know there is at least one fan of them out there.

Had a cool commission this past week. I was asked to choose from a variety of Marvel characters to draw in red pencil. Like many artist, I use a color pencil to develop a drawing before going and using a regular pencil to put detail into a piece. My usual selections are either blue, red or occasionally green. Many people used to use blue back in the day of photocopying pencils for the inking stage. The pro’s to using a blue pencil where that they made them so they would not (usually) show up in a photo copy. The con was that the blue pencil was also the waxiest of all pencils and it resulted in smearing and could be rather difficult to to pencil over if you were someone who pressed down hard on your paper (guilty).

Anyway, the person who asked for this image had seen a piece I had done that was done in just red pencil and asked me to do one for him in that style. He gave me a variety of characters to choose from. I couldn’t decide between two of them. Iron Fist or Daredevil. The solution was simple, draw both.

I decided to draw Daredevil in just red and then take Iron Fist and draw him in just green. I thought it’d make for a cool final look having these characters draw in the main colors of their costumes. I like the end result.

Last summer I posted an image I illustrated based off one of the wacky characters you can find over at the Saint Paul Saints baseball games. His name was Timber! and he is one of the many awesome “Ushertainers” you can find over at Midway Stadium any given night.

This year I decided to continue the tradition and illustrate Superfan. Probably the most popular of them all. You can’t really explain Superfan, you just need to go see him for yourself. He’s awesome.

I’ve been in somewhat of a drawing rut lately and have been hating everything I’ve drawn. So this one took a few sketches to get where I wanted it to be. I was looking at doing something more abstract and shapely. Make the character more simplistic yet keeping fluid shapes. Anyway the first two sketches were OK but they seemed too much like the work I usually do. The form and anatomy was too typical. I was looking to change it up, even if just slightly.

The third sketch was pretty close to what I wanted. The character looks more like a ball of fun than the other ones. Which is exactly what I think of when I think of Superfan.

My only real complaint is I wanted to go with some abstract colorsĀ  but I decided to keep it normal as it needed to portray the character more. Sadly not everyone is familiar with the Superfan yet so it’s easier to make that connection if you keep the color scheme to more natural tones.

I am happy with the final. Superfan himself approved it and that was the end goal. Hopefully the illustration does him some good and helps promote him and the Saints. Both are a lot of fun.
